1. Champadevi hiking (one-day program)

Champadevi Hiking, a good Experience

Situated southwest of Kathmandu at an elevation of 2285m, Champadevi is a pilgrimage site, with a Buddhist stupa and a Hindu shrine. Early in the morning you make the 16km/1hr drive south from Kathmandu to Pharping, which lies on the way to the Dakshinkali temple. As you commence the hike the trail heads north along a pine forested ridge, and after half an hour the trail turns southward for the 3-hour walk to Champadevi. The views of the central and western Himalayan ranges are magnificent. After enjoying the splendid views, a 2-hour walk on the same path will bring you back to Pharping for your return drive to Kathmandu.

2. Pulchowki hiking (one-day program)

Phulchowki, at an elevation of 2782m, is the highest hill in the Kathmandu valley. Hiking into this area is most interesting in terms of vegetation and bird life. You begin early in the morning with a 14km/45min drive from Kathmandu to Godavari, where the Royal Botanical Garden is located. From here you hike gradually uphill along a rugged motorable road through sub-tropical thick forest about four hours. The magnificent view of Himalayan range and the Kathmandu valley is breathtaking on a clear day. After a short rest, a 2-hour walk down the same trail will bring you back to Godawari, from where you drive back to Kathmandu.

3. Namobuddha hiking (one-day program)

Namobuddha (1750m) is a very important Buddhist pilgrimage site about 38 kilometers east of Kathmandu. The stupa and shrines built on this lovely little hill mark a very ancient holy site where it is said that a prince named Mahasattva offered himself to a starving tigress and her cubs, and this episode is depicted on a stone slab next to a holy stupa. Early in the morning you drive from Kathmandu for about 1 1/2 hours to Dhapasi, 35 kilometers east of Kathmandu.
The trail heads northeast and becomes narrow as you hike further. You cross a suspension bridge and pass through many small villages to a vast area of rice fields. From here it’s a 1-hour hike up the steep trail to Namobuddha. After visiting the sites and taking a short rest, you walk to Dhulikhel and then drive back to Kathmandu.

4. Shivapuri hiking from Budhanilkantha via Nagi Gompa (one-day program)

Shivapuri, at 2563m, is the second highest hill in the Kathmandu valley, and it is here that Bagdwar, the source of the holy Bagmati River, is located. A 30-minute drive will bring you to Muhan Pokhari, and after completing formalities at the Shivapuri entrance gate, you enter the Shivapuri watershed and wildlife area. You commence your hike from the southern boundary of the area where the army check-post is located. You follow the trail for 1½ hours along a rugged motorable road through pine and cherry forest up to the nunnery, Nagi Gompa. Beyond the monastery, it’s a steep uphill hike through oak, rhododendron and bamboo forest for another three hours. From here one can enjoy the beauty of the majestic Himalayas such as Ganesh Himal, Langtang-Lirung and Dorji Lhakpa before taking a shortcut downhill that will bring you to Budhanilkantha in about two and half hours. Drive back to Kathmandu.

5. Kakani to Bhanjyang hike (one-day program)

Kakani: a Natural Place.

This is an interesting hike through oak, rhododendron and pine forest. Early in the morning, you make the one-hour drive from Kathmandu to Kakani (2073m), which is 32km north of Kathmandu. From here the trail leads to the east along a graveled, motorable road. Except for the last 20-minute steep climb to reach Bhanjyang, the entire 3-hour hike is on a level path. After taking some time to rest and enjoy the exquisite Himalayan panorama, you retrace your steps back to Kakani, which you reach in about two and half hours. Drive back to Kathmandu.

6. Nagarkot hike (one-day program)

Chisapani Nagarkot hiking: Heaven for hiker.

The village of Nagarkot is on the edge of the valley and offers superb views of the Kathmandu valley and the Himalaya range, stretching from Dhaulagiri in the west all the way past Everest to Kanchenjunga in the east. A 1-hour drive in the morning will bring you to Sankhu, from where you begin your 3½-hour hike to Nagarkot. At Nagarkot, you will enjoy a delicious lunch before starting your 3-hour hike to Changunarayan. One of the most popular trails in the Kathmandu valley, you hike along a ridge to the temple of Changunarayan, with views of Sankhu village to the right and Bhaktapur to the left. Situated at the end of a long ridge which runs well into the valley, Changunarayan is said to have been built in 323 AD by King Hari Datta Varma. The temple, famous for its architecture, is richly decorated with sculptures and carvings. It is said to be the oldest temple in the valley. After an excursion in and around Changunarayan, you board your vehicle for the 1½-hour drive back to Kathmandu.
