The Everest Gokyo Ri trek is one of the best destinations for Everest trekking. This trek begins at the mountain airstrip of Lukla, a one-hour flight from Kathmandu. Our destination is the high altitude lakes of Gokyo at over 4200m. Less frequented than the Everest Base Camp route, the Gokyo Ri trek provides some tremendous high altitude trekking and a visit to the second largest glacier in the world. From the top of Gokyo Ri there are some spectacular views of mountains, including Everest. We return to Lukla and our flight back to Kathmandu.
Explore the Sherpa museum in Namche Bazar, enjoy the panoramic view from Syanboche, and experience Sherpa culture in Khumjung village. Ascend Gokyo Ri, and enjoy the grand view of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Nuptse and Amadablam.
Since the terrain can be hard and the days long, hikers on the Everest Gokyo trek should be in good physical condition and have some previous mountain walking experience. However, this Everest trekking does not require any technical experience. Steep climbing may be involved, although it is never necessary to use ropes.
You will wake up eager to start your Everest trekking day. Before breakfast you pack your stuff into your kit bag which is then taken by the porters and will not usually be available to you until lodge that afternoon. We are usually on the trail between 7.30 am and 8.30 am. Following a good morning's walk, we stop for lunch at around 11 am. Lunch is usually a one-hour break to allow for the trekker's meal followed by the crew's meal. This break also enables you to do your washing or take a short break, although with stops along the way, you will cope with a moderately graded trek. Speed is not important; stamina, confidence and continuity are. The evenings are spent reading or chatting with your associate trekkers and crew about the trip so far. A pack of cards is an asset on these nights; the crew love teaching various Nepali card games and learning new Western games. Finally, Before going to bed your guide will brief your about tomorrow's trekking route. It’s off to bed for a well deserved night's rest before you continue on your Everest Gokyo Ri trek.
